Ten Travel Tips

To Save You Money And

Make Your Trip More Enjoyable!

Here are some great travel tips that have taken me years to discover!
I hope you find these tips very useful during your travels.

1    Airlines:

1   Norwegian Air - Non-stop from New York JFK - Amsterdam $159.90, Spain $199.90, Non-stop from L.A. to Rome $189.90, Non-stop from L.A. to Paris $199.90 In 2018 my wife and I traveled to Barcelona on what seemed like a brand new aircraft with plenty of leg room. Trust me; this is the best airline if you love traveling.

2    SouthWest Air - Local, Cheap flight to L.A.

2    Cruise Lines:

1   Viking River & Oceanline Cruises -   (Small Ship)

2    Paul Gauguin Cruises - (Luxury & Award Winning) Excellent!      (Small Ship)

3    Carnival Cruises (Lower Budget, but ok) Big Ship. Way too many people.

3    Best Travel Book

Rick Steves Italy - All books are great

4    Best Travel & Tour Companies

   1    Tripmasters - - Barcelona, Lisbon and Porto 9 nights $1,069

2    Overseas Adventure Travel - Costa Rica 13 Days (Small Group) $2,895

   3    Affordable World - Thailand - 10 Days 8 Nights $1,399

    4    Ritz Tours - China  - Beijing - Xian - Shanghai 10 Days $1,349.

5    Do you want to learn a language ?

duolingo.com  - Learn Any Language For Free!

This free online course is excellent! Study on your computer, cell phone or tablet. I’ve paid for online programs and DVD courses that were not as well thought out and simple to use as this one. I think you will like it. They also have a paid version, but free works for me.

6    What is the best travel camera?

I have packed around my Canon camera with many lenses and other gear for many years.  I was tired of carrying 30 pounds of camera gear, a tripod and a suitcase everywhere I traveled. I found the perfect lightweight camera that fits in my pocket. A camera made so well that it takes as good, if not better, pictures than my professional camera.

The camera is a Sony A6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm lens 24 MP. Check out the reviews. You also get a camera that shoots HD video too.  I have had this camera for two years and am very happy with it. I think you will be too.  The average traveler might find this camera a bit pricy at $648. If you shop around you might find a better deal.

7    Are you traveling to a remote part of the world?

Here is a great way to create goodwill and have locals lining up to have their pictures taken by you. Purchase a decent (cheap) point and shoot instant film camera. Only $49.99. Give some photos away as a token of appreciation for allowing you to take some pictures of the people in the village that you visit. The camera I recommend is FUJIFILM INSTAX Mini 9 Instant Film Camera. It comes in a variety of colors. This camera produces credit card-sized prints.

8    Where is the best place online to purchase a camera?

      B&H Photo&Video

I have purchased many cameras, lenses, tripods, and other equipment from these guys. They are located in New York and never give you a hassle if you need to return something. The best part is there is no sales tax, and the shipping is free.

9    Have you ever been pickpocketed?

Sometimes on a crowded train in Japan, where people are shoved in like sardines, or in Rome, Italy during early morning rush hour, I felt at risk of losing my wallet. Lucky for me, I haven’t lost it yet.  My peace of mind while in these situations forced me to find a solution.  Last year, I bought a pair of “Pick-Pocket Proof Travel Pants.

I don’t usually buy clothes online, mainly because of my odd shaped body. However, the pants worked out fine. They were a little baggy, but I only wear them when I know I will be traveling in risky places. It was a good investment and well worth the peace of mind.  These pants are well made and have zippered pockets with buttons securing them closed — many secret pockets for cell phones and extra cash. The only drawback for me is that it can take me 10-15 minutes to open all the zippers and buttons to pay for an expresso. I do recommend them.

10    Finally, A cell phone plan that won’t break the bank when you are lost using your GPS to find your way back to the hotel.

I have Verizon’s Travel Pass attached to my cell phone.  Anytime I travel outside of the United States, and I have (Roaming) on, the phone will connect to the country that I am in and my bill will be $10.00 for the day.  There are limitations as to time spent calling and data used for browsing.  About 30 min. Calling and about 52 webpage browsing.

Turn off data usage

Reduce data roaming charges by updating your settings to check for email and wireless connections manually, rather than automatically. That way, you can check and send emails when it’s convenient (e.g., when you’re using free Wi-Fi at the hotel). Alternatively, you can keep your phone in “airplane mode” when you don’t need Wi-Fi to help prevent your phone’s battery from draining too quickly.

Make sure not to lose your original SIM card, because you'll need it when you return home. If you don't have an international data plan, turn off Cellular Data and Data Roaming.

Take advantage of free messaging platforms.

The increase of international travel means that companies are finding new ways to keep us connected through a simple Wi-Fi connection. If you plan on using a laptop, Skype is great for messaging and voice calls. Want to text your friends from abroad? Free apps like WeChat and WhatsApp allow you to send messages (and photos and stickers!) over Wi-Fi.

     Look out for free Wi-Fi

Most hotels offer free Wi-Fi for at least 24 hours — check with the front desk to see if they have a username and password that can use to access it. Increasingly, cafes and restaurants also offer free Wi-Fi and will happily give out the password if you ask.

Use a prepaid phone card.

If you plan on making phone calls to loved ones back at home, one of the easiest things to do is purchase a prepaid phone card. You can find them at gas stations and local tobacconist shops, and it’ll allow you to make calls from a local landline or pay phone in the country you’re visiting.

I hope you find these tips valuable in your travels.

Happy Travels

Vincent
